Ever had a turning point? A life changing moment?
Gills’ was when she became lost in the African jungle on her own. She
emerged 5 days later a very different person, having discovered and developed
strengths that until then had been untested and a resourcefulness and creativity
that has enabled her to create two successful businesses which go from strength
to strength.
After climbing Mount Kenya to almost 17,000 feet She became disorientated by
altitude sickness. It took her five days of walking through a river, and following
animal paths, negotiating waterfalls and relying on her sense of smell to warn
of animals close by, to reach safety. At the beginning it was below freezing
at night and having lost all her belongings down a waterfall she shivered herself
to sleep. Initially energised by the challenge, without food and walking and
climbing twelve hours a day, she lost two stone and got more and more exhausted
as time went on. "I could close my eyes and be asleep on my feet and I
had to will myself to go on. It was close to Christmas and I made a decision
I would not spend Christmas alone on that mountain. That gave me the determination
to continue. In fact I was found by two very kind Kenyan men on Christmas eve!"
That crisis became an opportunity to rewrite the script of her life. Having
decided on a career in social work she followed the usual career path until
1989 but returning from Kenya it felt as though I’d been brought back
to do something much greater.
Gill is a public speaker who tells her jungle story.
“
Many people are on the finding themselves journey, but haven’t lost themselves
sufficiently!”
The story is a parable to stimulate people to embrace life and stretch themselves
physically, mentally and emotionally and to rekindle the spirit, energy and
motivation that bring people alive.
“
My experience in the danger zone will encourage others out of their comfort
zones”.
